It used to be that it was blatantly obvious when someone was wearing dentures. They were generally unattractive and didn’t look very much like real teeth. Thankfully technology has changed in the past 30 or so years. Now high-quality dentures look so much like real teeth that it’s almost impossible to tell them apart. Those who don’t wear dentures, however, often wonder how dentures stay in.
Quite often people believe that you need to use some sort of adhesive to keep dentures firmly in the mouth. This, however, is not true! If a person wearing dentures needs to have glue or some sort of adhesive product, that is a sign that the dentures are not fitted properly and may need to be updated. Most of the time it’s the natural suction of the dentures in the mouth that keep them firm.
It is true that the longer you have a set of dentures, the more likely it is going to be that you’ll need to have some sort of adhesive. This is because gums naturally recede. It’s always a better option, however, to have your dentures remade rather than to use an adhesive. There are partial dentures and complete denture options available, in this day and age.
Most denture wearers say that it’s a bit strange to get used to wearing dentures, and that makes sense. It will take a while for your gums to get used to the dentures in your mouth. Things might feel awkward at first and you may find that you have a more difficult time talking. This is all normal, especially if you were missing a number of teeth before you had the dentures manufactured. With time, however, you’ll get used to the feel of the dentures in your mouth and fairly rapidly you’ll forget what it was like to not have them. It is important to note that if your dentures feel tight or cause you to the pain you should consult your dental specialist as this is a sign that something isn’t quite right with your dentures or the fit of them.
